Tallinn Music Week: My Favourite Marathon
It's not an exaggeration to say that Tallinn Music Week is my favourite event of the year. I've taken a slightly different approach to the festival this year compared to last time around. In 2014, I went a bit crazy trying to visit as many locations as possible in the shortest possible time. I also stayed out way too late every night, treating the three-day event like a sprint, not a marathon.
For the 2015 edition, I've decided to pace myself. On Friday night, having picked up my pass, I went to Sinilind, where Tallinn Daggers preceded Elephants from Neptune. Tallinn Daggers had a kind of early-80s post-punk sound that appealed to me, as a fan of groups like Editors when they first came along, as well as New Order retrospectively.
Elephants are the closest that Estonia has to the Black Keys - the tightest of blues-rockers, whose jam sessions could wipe the floor with a lot of bands' actual songs. The quality and craftsmanship of their music was on another level. I hope Estonia is proud of Elephants - like the animal, they have colossal power
